Roman fortification built AD 122-126 to mark
England's northern boundary and abandoned
about 383; its ruins run 185 km/115 mi from
Wallsend on the river Tyne to Maryport, W
Cumbria. In some parts, the wall was covered
with a glistening, white coat of mortar. The
fort at South Shields, Arbeia, built to
defend the eastern end, is being
reconstructed. In 1985 Roman letters (on
paper-thin sheets of wood), the earliest and
largest collection of Latin writing, were
discovered at Vindolanda Fort.
